This year, skip the predictable chocolates and give something they'll genuinely enjoy, every single day. Because great coffee isn’t just a drink. It’s five quiet minutes. A slow morning. A well-earned pause.

Global Recycling Day: Small Changes, Big Impact
Every year, Global Recycling Day invites us to pause and think about the materials we use every day; where they come from, and where they end up. It’s a simple idea with a powerful message: the choices we make, even the small ones, have a lasting impact on the world around us.
In coffee, those choices appear everywhere. From the farms where coffee is grown, to the roasting process, to the cup in your hand. Each stage offers an opportunity to reduce waste, reuse materials, and rethink how things are done.
At our roastery and across our coffee houses, sustainability is something we’re continually working towards. It’s not about claiming perfection, but about making thoughtful decisions and improving step by step. Often, the most meaningful progress comes from small changes made consistently.
Giving Coffee By-Products a Second Life
Coffee naturally produces by-products throughout its journey. Used coffee grounds, hessian sacks, packaging materials — these things can quickly add up. Rather than seeing them as waste, we look for ways they can be repurposed.
One of our favourite examples comes from something many people wouldn’t think twice about: used coffee grounds.
Instead of simply discarding them, we work with local company Kava, who transform these grounds into durable surfaces used in furniture. The tables you’ll find in our coffee houses are created using this innovative material, turning yesterday’s coffee into the place where tomorrow’s coffee is enjoyed.

Making Pod Recycling Easy
Coffee pods have become a popular way to enjoy speciality coffee at home, but they also raise important questions about sustainability.
That’s why we’ve partnered with Podback, a nationwide recycling service designed specifically for coffee pods. Through this scheme, it’s simple for customers to recycle our 100% aluminium coffee pods.
Aluminium is an ideal material for recycling because it can be reused indefinitely without losing quality. Once recycled, it can be transformed into everything from drinks cans to bicycles and beyond — keeping valuable resources in use rather than sending them to landfill.
Great coffee should be convenient, but it should also be responsible.

Supporting Local Upcycling
Sustainability isn’t just about recycling — it’s also about extending the life of materials wherever possible.
The hessian sacks used to transport green coffee beans are a great example. These durable, characterful bags have already travelled thousands of miles before they reach our roastery, and it would be a shame for them to stop there.
Instead, we donate many of our sacks to local makers and creatives who transform them into new products through upcycling. From bags and homeware to garden materials and craft projects, these sacks continue their journey in new and unexpected ways.
It’s a small way of supporting creativity in our local community while reducing waste at the same time.
Thoughtful Packaging Choices
Packaging is another area where small improvements can make a real difference.
Our coffee bags and boxes are made using recycled materials, and they’re designed to be fully recyclable once you’ve finished with them. By choosing materials that can stay in circulation, we can reduce the demand for new raw resources and help minimise unnecessary waste.
It’s not always the most visible part of the coffee experience, but it’s one of the areas where careful design can have a meaningful impact.
Progress, One Step at a Time
Global Recycling Day is a good reminder that sustainability rarely happens through one big breakthrough. More often, it’s the result of many small decisions — made by businesses, communities, and individuals alike.
For us, that means continually asking questions:
Can this be reused?
Can this be recycled?
Is there a better way to do this?
Sometimes the answers are simple. Sometimes they take time to figure out. But each step helps move things in the right direction.
How Small Actions Add Up
Recycling your coffee pods, choosing products made from recycled materials, or finding ways to reuse everyday items might seem like small actions. But when thousands of people make those choices, the impact becomes significant.
Global Recycling Day celebrates that collective effort — a reminder that sustainability isn’t just about what happens behind the scenes in businesses like ours. It’s something we all take part in.
So whether it’s enjoying your morning coffee, recycling your pods, or giving materials a second life, those small choices are part of a much bigger picture.
Because when it comes to protecting the planet, small changes really do add up. 🌍☕
